Week 8- 3D printing

This week we were tasked with taking screenshots of ten areas that were either residential, commercial, rural, urban. high rise, or industrial. We used Google Earth to accomplish this. I took screenshots from places both in the U.S and around the world. These are the screenshots I gathered.

Week 5- Laser cut : Cube

This week my group started the laser cutting section. Our first assignment was to create a 3 inch by 3-inch cube with sides that fit perfectly together using notches and tabs. The medium that we used was Baltic Birch. The blueprints were created in Adobe Illustrator using the pen tool, the shape tool, and the shape builder tool.
To create the perfect cube, we had to do some math to make sure that all of the pieces fit together correctly. We calculated that the female sides, the sides that the notches were cut out of, had to be 3 by 3 inches with 1/8th of an inch notches. The male sides, the sides with the tabs, had to be 2 and 3/4 ths of an inch by 2 and 3/4 ths of an inch with 1/8th of an inch tabs. The hybrid sides, which had both tabs and notches, had to be 3 inches by 2 and 3/4 ths of an inch. After we figured out the math we went to Illustrator to construct the sides. We started by using a 24 inch by 12-inch art board to match the size of the material we would be cutting in the laser. Then, to make sure that everything was precise, we turned on the grid and rulers in the software. After creating one of each kind we just copied and pasted another one so that we would have two of each side. Then we made sure that the stroke was set to .0001 inches to make sure that the laser would cut it. Finally, we saved the document as a Illustrator C6 legacy file so that we could open it on the computer connected to the laser.

After my cube was all cut and finally assembled this was the final result.

Week 4- Virtual Reality: Cityscape

Cityscape

For this week we were to create three buildings that were to be created with a limited color palette. We each got one color and were allowed to use the its complimentary color along with black, white, and neutrals. My color was violet so all of my buildings are created using purple and a golden yellow. This project was done using a vive headset, the steam app, and Google Tilt Brush. Within Tilt Brush I used various brushes like the highlighter and the tapered brush to create texture, Windows and light both inside and outside of the buildings. I also used the straight edge tool and the shape tool in the software to assist in the construction of the buildings.

All of the buildings I created have something to do with what I love. I have a passion for baking, musical theatre, and space so naturally I created a bakery, a theatre, and an observatory. For the bakery, I just followed a very simplistic outline. It contained the minimal things that a place needs for it to function as a bakery, a counter space and a kitchen with the added feature of a few tables and chairs for the option of dining in. The observatory is shaped like a sphere to mimic the shape of a planet. The inside of it is made to function as a screen that translates the images received by the telescope to create an all encompassing experience. For the theater I made it a kind of small scale theater that would be relatively functional. It has seats, a stage and a backstage area, a ticket booth, bathrooms, an elevator, and even a refreshments stand. It's very small considering that it only contains an orchestra level and a dress circle level.

Week 3- Virtual reality: Garden

Garden Vr

Our assignment was to create a garden within the virtual reality space. The sketches that I uploaded last week were what I used as a jumping off point for my garden. I used a vive virtual reality headset, Steam software, and Google Tilt Brush to complete this project. Within Tilt Brush I used the wire brush, the soft highlighter, and some of the plain brushes to create the flowers, the tree, and the sign at the entrance of the garden.
I wanted to create a garden that was mystical in nature so I used a light blue color with the soft highlighter brush to create a smokey, almost water like effect to the garden. Since another part of the assignment was to create five real plants and five plants that we made up I used some of my favorite real plants and plants that were based off of different things that I love. Among the real plants are tiger lilies, pictured below, which are my favorite flower and among the imaginary ones is a plant that i created based off my favorite musical, Hamilton. The plant, pictured above, takes it's flower colors from the dresses of the Schuyler sisters and the leaves and stems are gold based off the musical poster.

Week 2- Photos and sketches

This week we we got our groups. My group is starting in Virtual reality so during class we were tasked to go out and take pictures of the various plants surrounding the art building. These photos will later be used as references off different plants that we could use in the virtual garden that we would be creating. These are some of the photos that I captured.

After we came back we started to sketch out some of the plants that we went out and photographed. When we were done with that we were also tasked with drawing out some plants that we made up. These sketches were what I had when we were done.

Week 1- Sketches

For this class our first assignment was to post 5-10 sketches of things that we would want to complete in the forms that we will be working in, VR painting, Laser cut, and 3D printing. For the most part, most of these I would like to do in Virtual Reality painting but one or two of them would translate nicely to 3D printing or laser cutting.
